Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. Between two work as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. Her goal was to be an high school English teacher. The dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was shattered when she dropped out of high school. After starting her career doing live poetry shows She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They ended up collaborating as well as co-writing You Got Me. At the Roots concert, she was spotted as an artist. Then she secured collaborations for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained performance experience through the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign by Hidden Beach Recordings.
